The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen

false prince

The book is about a kingdom lost its royal family to the deadly politics of the kingdom. A fool’s idea which is also treason might save the kingdom at a huge price, but who will go through with it. This is the first book in The Ascendance Trilogy.

Valuable lessons were code words for pain that no one apologized for

The royal family falls victims to a murder plot. Four orphans are picked by a noble of the kingdom and are forced to compete in a twisted and treacherous game. The noble claims, he wants to save the kingdom from the wrath of a tyrant but his true motives are unknown. He announces that the winner of the orphans will become the imposter prince for life. But winning doesn’t come easy when the orphans realize that their lives at stake, to lose the competition certainly means death. Who amongst the four will win? Where is the true prince? What are the intentions of the noble? Will the kingdom ever be saved?

I liked the character named Sage. An orphan with a knack for getting into trouble. His wittiness brings humor to the book and his quick thinking make you root for him. The events in the book are well paced. The story is typical “lost prince” tale. There are no jaw-dropping reveals but the story never gets boring. The author’s brilliance is understood when the story is good enough to keep the reader hooked into the book even though they know the ending. The dialogues are well written and characterizations are decent.

It is definitely an enjoyable read but I don’t think I will be rushing anytime soon to read the sequel. I liked this book but I would have loved it if there was a surprise element in the book. I recommend it to anyone, who is looking to start a new book and who love funny protagonists.

Rating: 3.5/5

Happy Reading 🙂
