I Do Not Trust You by Laura J. Burns, Melinda Metz

An adventurous tale where two teenagers with individual motivations work together to find lost pieces of a doomsday statue. I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher, Wednesday Books in exchange for an honest review.

Who knew where the line was between truth and memory?

Memphis “M” is the daughter of a renowned late archeologist. She is trying to come to terms with the death of her father when a stranger hunts her down to tell her father is still alive. The stranger from London, Ashwin claims to have met her father and asks for a map which is the guide to find lost pieces of statue of the Egyptian god, Set. She makes a deal with Ashwin to save her father, overlooking the consequences which follow her choice. With M’s knowledge of civilizations and Ashwin’s resources, they race against time, fight the cults, and embark on an exciting adventure.

I liked how the two protagonists bring out different views about mythology in this book. The Egyptian myth of Horus and Set is well explained in the story. I had a hard time liking the story because everything in the story seemed too convenient from the beginning. I felt the Horus cult could have acted earlier because they were literally non-existent until the end. The authors tried too hard to make Memphis look like a badass but forgot about the characterization of Ashwin. Mike’s character is really a surprise which I liked and enjoyed. The book needs some exciting twists and better plot with little more background in Egyptian mythology.

The story felt like Robert Langdon was on an Indiana Jones adventure involving Egyptian myths. It is a good idea but needs better execution. I recommend this book to readers who are novices in Egyptian mythology. The book is releasing on September 11th, 2018; so mark your calendars for the book birthday.
